The Ugly Truth about Writing!
‘The Fairy Godmonster’
Once upon a time, there was a child with a dream. That dream was to be a writer and she wished and wished and wished and wished till she almost burst. Then one day out of the blue, her Fairy Godmonster appeared in a petering puff of thick black smoke. She was wearing a pale pink satin gown that had seen much better days, and which probably fitted her bulging silhouette a lot better several millennia ago. She carried a rather jaded and wholly unremarkable looking wand with absolutely no hint whatsoever of any razzle, dazzle or even a smattering of glittering kerfrazzle.
“My child,” she said wistfully, her aged face creasing deeply as her ancient tarnished tiara slipped over one ear. “Please stop wishing the same wish, you’re killing me with your abject repetitiveness!”
The Child looked up at the fairy and stared in total perplexing bewilderment.
“But isn’t that your job?” The child asked pointedly. “To grant wishes, that’s your designated M.O.”
The Fairy Godmonster sighed heavily, like the weight of the world was crushing her into the earth. “Child, my job is to guide you, not make it happen instantaneously.”
“That’s not right,” the child protested vehemently. “In all the Fairy Tales I’ve read, it’s your job to make wishes come true!”
The old woman shrugged, straightened up her lopsided tiara and messy white hair, tucking the straggling tresses into an unkempt bun. “Ahhhh… they were the good old days, when magic was magic and everyone believed,” she sighed again, as a few faded sequin stars fell off her bodice. “Child, times have changed and today I’m here to tell you that if you want something bad enough, you’ll have work for it because no reward is worth having unless you put the effort in.”
“But that’s not fair!” The child cried.
“Life isn’t fair,” her Fairy Godmonster replied almost tersely. “You’ve heard the saying, if life gives you lemons, make lemonade. Well it’s the same for everything. You want it, you work for it.”
The child gaped in disbelief at the old wizened fairy. “But I want to be a writer!” She snapped in a temper tantrum.
“That’s very simple,” her Fairy Godmonster answered calmly.
“Really?” The child asked in sudden awe, expecting the unexpected. “So what do I need to do?”
“Write!” The fairy replied and in a cloud of sooty smoke, she vanished.
* * *
Everyone has a dream of some sort or another and a lot of people in the world today want to be writers as well as astronauts, lion tamers, crocodile wrestlers and even swashbuckling pirates, plus a whole host of other wonderful vocations too. (There are far too many to mention here, nevertheless in another life I would like to explore far off galaxies, but only if I have full assurance that Ridley Scott’s Aliens don’t actually exist!)
Unless you own a publishing company or work within the industry there are no shortcuts. There are no Fairy Godmonsters lurking in the shadows to plonk you in the express elevator with a half-baked flourish of her wand and jettison you straight up to the publishing penthouse of glory.
If you really want to realise a dream and manifest it into the physical reality of being, then it’s up to you to do everything in your power to drag it kicking and screaming it into existence and the only way to go is: Just do it and keep on doing it. So just write and keep on writing.
It doesn’t matter how you start, just as long as you do. It doesn’t matter how bad or even how good you are. To reach a goal takes tangible and consistently applied effort on a relentless scale to achieve what you want to manifest. Without continuity and deliberate action, even your most cherished and desired dreams will fade into the ether and vanish without trace.
The reality seems harsh, but if you do something because you love it, then it will never seem like real work or a chore. If on the other hand, you do something because you think you should and don’t really believe in the quest, then failure is pretty much guaranteed.
The point is this:- Believe in yourself, put the work in and there is a lot of hard work. Don’t get distracted by the ‘small stuff’ and keep your dream alive. Work on it every day if you can, breathing in new life and make it grow and perhaps one day you may wake up to find a giant beanstalk in your back garden and realize that you achieved what you set out to do. That is a truly awesome moment.
Don’t ever be discouraged, waylaid or detoured by others, do it because you want to, need to and have to. Do it because you love it. Never worry about time frames or constraints, everything evolves exactly when it’s meant too and never ever be upset by Agents or Publishers, it’s their raison d’etre to reject you. To find every possible excuse under the sun to say no and each time, if it happens, you’ll learn something new from the experience. Just climb back on that keyboard and hammer out those words, as one day they won’t have any more excuses to say no.
Being a writer is a long road for some and for others, a fortunate few, not so much. But for the majority it can be a Highway to Hell and then back again. So ignore the blatant rebuffs and listen to constructive criticism, take on-board whatever you can that facilitates your growth as a writer. Listen to the productive, the nurturing, and the positive. Listen to the good and learn from the bad.
If you want something desperately enough and act diligently and productively, you’ll get it and you can tell your Fairy Godmonster to hang up her worn-out wand and that she’s surplus to requirement.
Write like your life depends on it!
