Review: Men of the Cave by Marisette Burgess

Young Adult Fantasy
Symbol of Hope #1

Raised by unorthodox parents, Kasey Reese has always struggled to be invisible, to not be noticed, to avoid conflict. Running from a broken relationship, Kasey flees to Spain on a scholarship, to restore the comfort she finds in anonymity. Destiny, however, has other plans for her - a life threatening, life-altering journey into the supernatural when she meets the men of the cave

My Review

Kasey is off to Spain for two semesters of college. That should be just enough distance to put between her and her ex. A fresh start and finally a chance to escape her freakishly odd parents and for once br in charge of her own life. Once arriving in Spain, she is immediately drawn to Dion. His speech and mannerisms remind her of an ancient time not that of today. What she doesn't understand is it is no mistake that Kasey has ended up in this area in Spain at this very time. I have to say that I loved Kasey's entire adventure. While it is a work of fiction, it is infused with stories of ancient Greece and the history of the Greek Gods. I for one am a huge fan of the stories of these guys and ladies so this story had high appeal to me. The characters in this novel are very well developed. You can picture each one in your head as you go along. I fell in love with them and their story, especially the five (actually 7) men of the cave. The plot itself is extremely fast paced. It is one of those novels that you dit down and read in one session. So be prepared when you start it. Editing was also very well done. No typos or grammatical errors seen while reading. As this is the first of the series, the author laid the framework here as to where she is going with this story. I am actually anxious to see how Kasey's prophesy plays out. Bringing Pandora in and changing the spin on her box was an amazing idea!!! I do list this as a recommended read. It is a great concept and story.

Guest Post with Robin L. Saunders, author of An 8-Track to 81 Chapters

Young Adult Fantasy

When a Social Studies teacher assigns a special project to six high school students, (Richard, Shelly, Nathan, Charles, Morgan and Britt) they receive a lesson that may indeed change lives of many worlds. As they work on the problems set before them they come to realize that the typical real world issues that each student had been dealing with doesn’t look all that bad. As the unlikely group of misfits explores the project, they discover strengths that they were completely unaware they had. For seven whole days they stay in a mysterious book unlocking puzzles, fighting demon-possessed statues, creating bonds with a memorable cast of characters and fighting a villain who controls the powers of the heavens. Mr. Hutchenson, a professor of social studies at St. Cardinals, is a man who plays a large part within this story, but just as the kids have to discover that, so does the reader. These six kids work on finding that strength by not only fighting the enemy, but the enemy within.

What are the challenges you face as a writer in your genre?

There aren’t many challenges when it comes to YA/Fantasy fiction. Fantasy can relate to anything involving the real world whether if it’s from a personal experience to things relating to pop culture. Although there aren’t as many challenges young adult fantasy writers face, there are two major issues I feel that should not be overlooked. Many authors who are professionals in their field also know a great deal about the market such as what would sell and what wouldn’t sell. Once they figured out what would sell (i.e. what’s popular) they would write books relating or similar to the original just to get a profit. Some authors however, aren’t aware of what they’re doing but unconsciously feel comfortable of fitting in with a certain group perhaps in need for status. Thus therefore they are nothing special but ordinary.

Writing something that is fan fiction or ordinary will rarely attract attention in my opinion. Anything that is ordinary is something that doesn’t stand out and could easily be looked over while  unintentionally aware of being camouflaged within its field. There’s nothing wrong with being ordinary and anyone can choose to live that lifestyle but ordinary doesn’t stand out. Try to see it as a bunch of fishes in a barrel, all in the same space, identical and nothing special, racing for the bait attached to a hook. All have the same percentage of getting caught no matter where they are as well as not being caught. In other words, more like a fifty percent chance between safety and disaster. Being ordinary could get you out of the critical eye and always in the safety zone and vice-versa. Selling an ordinary book wouldn’t make you a millionaire nor would make you go bankrupt however, you wouldn’t make much, which would force you to write more books for a living, instead of enjoyment. I also believe that ordinary could suck the passionate energy away from anybody whose seen everything…twin fold. A perfect example is picturing a supervisor going over resumes and reading the same crap over and over again. Nothing special just the same headers, 12pt font, Times New Roman, bold or regular emailed or
printed. This may sound harsh but coming from a casual audience this means nothing.

I wouldn’t go there and state that left-brain logical people are only in tuned to the ordinary because its laws bring order and structure and easy to follow. Some left-brain logical experts believe that all books should be stated only in originality and if its nothing of new and undiscovered quality then it is considered plagiarism. Pretty harsh. Another thing is that right- brain visionaries may think of a beautiful and eloquent story but chances are the same story was already printed or taken.

Another major challenge with writers is the fear of being original. Look, there’s nothing wrong with being original but if its like this late 70s era where men with high octaves wear sports bras for clothing, and eat white gooey liquid as sources for protein out of jock straps. Their women wear a KKK hat on their chest as a sports-bra while all of a sudden a metaphorical ending, entrenched with sadness that display a hidden message. Then a Native American and the black version of the statue of liberty with a hamburger appears from nowhere. Then yeah, that’s pretty original, my friend. Don’t do that. It’s pretty difficult writing something that wouldn’t grab people’s attention but what’s worse is to write something that would arouse disinterest. Anything too original or too off the wall would put you into a bad place. The positive side of it would attract an audience that would skyrocket you or anyone to success but on occasion very rare.

It would be best to say that having a balance of ordinary mixed in with some original zest would be a great chance of success. Everyone’s looking for something original but still has an interest with the ordinary and determining whether to become original or when to stay ordinary can be very difficult to pin point at the right time. And given the explosion of similar yet subtly different titles like Hunger Games, Harry Potter, Twilight and the like, it's finding that balance of uniqueness vs statue quo that I feel could be some of the biggest challenges facing Fantasy/ Young Adult novelist at this time.

Celebrating Jillian Dodd Giveaway!! A Thank You :-)

“THANK YOU Jillian for all that you do!”

Friends of Jillian Dodd are showing their appreciation!

In appreciation for the hard work and effort indie author Jillian Dodd does behind the scenes for authors, her writing friends are offering YOU the chance to win one of her books! You can choose from one of the Keatyn Chronicles: STALK ME or KISS ME. Or maybe you prefer one of the titles in the That Boy series: THAT BOY or THAT WEDDING. All books are New Adult contemporary romance. Good luck!

This is the first book I ever read by Jillian and I devoured it in less than a day. The second book in the series is just as good, if not better!

That Boy is a contemporary romance about falling in love with the boys next door.

You know, being friends with two cute boys does have its benefits.

There's Danny. Danny is a golden boy in every way. He has dreamy blue eyes and blonde hair that always looks perfect, even when it’s windblown or been stuck under a football helmet. He’s the boy every girl crushes on. The boy I get into trouble with, the boy I fight with, the hot quarterback no girl can resist, not even me. Being with Danny is like being on an adventure. He has a bright, contagious smile and abs to die for. He’s pretty much irresistible.

Equally crush worthy is Phillip. Adorable, sweet Phillip, who I have known since birth. Phillip has dark hair, a perfect smile, brown eyes, and the sexiest voice I have ever heard. He’s the boy I talk to every night before I go to sleep. The boy who rescues me, the boy who can read my mind, the boy who is always there for me, the boy who tries to keep me out of trouble, the boy who irritatingly keeps getting hotter, and whose strong arms always seem to find their way around me. And when he gives me that grin, I can never say no.
One boy will give me my very first kiss.
One boy will teach me to make out.
One boy will take me to prom.
And finally, one boy will ask me to marry him.
They will both be my best friends.
But only one of them will be the boy I fall in love with.
Only one of them is That Boy.

The gorgeous engagement ring on my finger mimics my happiness.
I feel so sparkly, glittery, and full of promise, because I absolutely know he's that boy.
The boy I want to marry. My prince. My happily ever after.
But then our pastor starts asking lots of questions.
His parents say I haven’t dealt with my past.
I have horrible wedding disaster dreams.
I can’t find the perfect dress.
I have to manipulate him to get my way.
An old boyfriend asks me to run away with him.
My best friend says I'm going to ruin everything.
And forever starts to sound like a really long time.
Which totally freaks me out and makes me question everything I know.
Should best friends get married?
Will my past affect our relationship?
Are my horrible dreams a warning?
Will I ever find a dress?
Could his sexiness be clouding my judgment?
Am I going to ruin everything?
Or is it just a case of cold feet?
And then I have to decide. Am I willing to give up on true love forever, or am I going to listen to
my heart and marry him?

Gossip girl meets Hollywood in this new series by That Boy author, Jillian Dodd.
Keatyn has everything she ever dreamed of. Her life is following the script she wrote for the
perfect high school experience. She’s popular, goes to the best parties, dates the hottest guy, and
sits at the most coveted lunch table.
She’s just not sure she wants it anymore.
Because really, things aren’t all that perfect.
Her best friend is threatening to tell everyone her perfect relationship is a scam.
Her perfect boyfriend gets drunk at every party they go to.
It’s exhausting always trying to look and act perfect.
And deep down, she isn’t sure if she has any true friends.
To add to the drama, her movie star mom’s long-time fan has turned stalker.
An older man is flirting with her and telling her they should make a movie together.
And she’s crushing on an adorable surfer. Dating a guy like him would mean committing social suicide.
So she writes a new script. One where all the pieces of her life will come together in perfect harmony.
But little does she know, there’s someone who will do anything to make sure that doesn’t happen.

I've always written scripts for my perfect life.
But no way could I have ever scripted this.
My life is so far from perfect, it’s not even funny.
All because of a stalker.
I’m at a boarding school where I have to lie about who I am.
I can’t see my family.
I’m tutoring a Hottie God that tortures me with his smile.
The most popular girl already hates me.
But there’s this boy.
This hot, sweet, sexy boy.
So I’m going to stop trying to script my life and just live it.
Because who knows how long I have left.

My Review

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was so excited when I first heard about this book and couldn't wait to read it. I read Preservation by her and I absolutely loved it. This book was just WOW. I can't even function right now. I would have finished it last night but these things called responsibilities got in the way. I won't go into giving you a synopsis of the book since the blurb gives you a pretty good gist of it.

Only Rachael can make me love, then hate, the love Jackson again. There was a point where I wish I could have jumped onto the paged and punched him myself. Oh, but she made everything all better for me. It go to to point where I was thinking it wasn't going to be a happy ever after. I would have jumped on a plane and strangled her. I was heartbroken for the last 10%. Jackson was very protective of Emma. Mix that protectiveness with holy HOT DAMN of a man and you have Jackson. Goddamn I want his babies.

I really loved Preservation but this one blew that one out of the water...if that's even possible. I also love the way Rachael writes her female leads. They aren't annoying and I love their sass. She also threw in a few JLA references, which I loved. I recommend Preservation all the time and now I'll be pimping out Love and Relativity like it's my job! Read this book RIGHT NOW!!

Review: Opal by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Young Adult Paranormal Romance
Lux series #3
No one is like Daemon Black.

When he set out to prove his feelings for me, he wasn’t fooling around. Doubting him isn’t something I’ll do again, and now that we’ve made it through the rough patches, well... There’s a lot of spontaneous combustion going on.

After everything, I’m no longer the same Katy. I’m different... And I’m not sure what that will mean in the end. When each step we take in discovering the truth puts us in the path of the secret organization responsible for torturing and testing hybrids, the more I realize there is no end to what I’m capable of. The death of someone close still lingers, help comes from the most unlikely source, and friends will become the deadliest of enemies, but we won’t turn back. Even if the outcome will shatter our worlds forever.

Together we’re stronger... and they know it.

My Review

Katy has FINALLY given in to Daemon. She originally thought that their connection was the reason for his attraction towards her. I thought that the Daemon charm we all love so much would be gone once they were together. I was wrong...still infuriating Daemon. That was my main concern starting this book. Katy's sass is still there and Daemon's ego is still huge.

An unwanted visitor comes back on the scene with a proposition that would free Beth, Dawson's girlfriend that is being held in a compound. They will get assistance from another Luxen that knows the ropes of the compound. Their journey wont be an easy one and there are obstacles in the way. Katy also tries to repair her relationship with Dee.

Be prepared to have your heart torn out. I always say that I love a good book with an even better cliffhanger, but I want to shoot something right now. I was not expecting THAT outcome. I'm such a huge fan of this series and the author always leaves me wanting more. I have to many questions and not enough answers. This was so bittersweet. I'm intrigued to see how the next book will be written. If you have not read this series, please do. The author does not disappoint. I recently purchased all of her Covenant series so I think I'll start those soon.

Tell us a bit about yourself

Wide-open and general questions like this always throw me. LOL There’s so much to tell about an individual; there are so many sides to all of us. But, let’s see…. Off the top of my head? I’m a night person. I love dark chocolate covered short bread. I’ve been writing since I was five. Seeing a real, live blue whale face to face is on my bucket list. And I love fog. ;)

When did you begin writing?

(Now I really am laughing out loud) See above.

Have you ever been discouraged in regard to your writing ability and if so, how did you get past it and move forward?

I’ve never questioned my ability to write. In fact, you might say I’m downright arrogant about it. However, it really is my gift. It’s the one thing I can say I can do better than anyone I know, and it’s the one thing that defines me – in my soul. Now, that isn’t to say that I haven’t questioned my ability to punctuate correctly or tighten my sentences, and I’ve definitely rolled my eyes at my own words from time to time. My talent has most certainly improved over time and with practice. But all of the hateful reviewers in the world couldn’t take this ability away from me. It’s mine.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

Playing God. I know how that sounds, but seriously. Think about it. You can literally (no pun intended) do ANYTHING you want when you write. ANYTHING! If you want to create a scarab beetle who is really a professor at Carapace University and an undercover spy for CII (Central Insect Intelligence) and is best friends with a neurotic spider who can’t stop counting her own legs – you CAN!

What is your writing style? Do you like to outline or just write as you go?

I used to just write as I went and allow the characters and their tribulations carry me along. However, when you start getting into expanded series, you almost have no choice but to outline at least a little bit.
Of course… then I just go and deviate from the outline horribly and write myself into corners. Again and again.

Do you have a favorite spot where you like to write?

I’ve got a bad back, so I can’t sit in one place for very long. I write in a blanket nest on my couch, at the kitchen table, in the front seat of my car while waiting for someone, at Barnes and Noble, at Starbucks – you name it. I take my laptop everywhere with me, and if I can’t carry the laptop, I take a notebook and pen.

What is something you've written that will never see the light of day?

Well, once it’s written, it has sort of seen the light of day, but if you mean something personal – there are my various dairies, of course. There are also letters to loved ones, written in the heat of angry passion. You know how those are. On a less secretive note, there are the short stories, poems, prose,
and novellas I’ve written over the years that didn’t reach indie or mainstream publishing. There are too many of those to list.

What is your writer food?

It’s a drink, really: hot tea with soymilk.

What's the hardest thing about writing for you?

At first, it was finding the time for it. Now it’s finding the energy and desire. Writers get burned out, and I’m writing too many things at once. I need to streamline, disappoint a few fans, and stick with just one series.

What inspires you to write?

Life and reality – and the ways that I would change them if I could.

How many books have you written and which is your favorite?
I believe at this point, I have published (I have some that are unpublished)
around 21 books:
Hell Bent
The Chosen Soul
Drake of Tanith
A Sinister Game
The Third Kiss
The Heat
The Strip
The Spell
The Hunt
The Kings, book one: The Vampire King
The Kings, book two: The Phantom King
The October Trilogy: Sam I Am
The October Trilogy: Secretly Sam
Forever Neverland
Redeemer
Always Angel
Avenger’s Angel
Messenger’s Angel
Death’s Angel
Thorn and Grace (part one of Vampire, Vampire; Thorn and Grace is a full length book on its own)
The Patrick Sinclaire Story (part two of Vampire, Vampire and renamed “Relentless”)

I honestly don’t know at this point whether I can pick a favorite of the books I’ve written. They’re all so different and wonderful in their own ways.

What are some of your favorite books?

As for other authors, I love Terry Pratchett’s sense of humor and adore Samuel Clemens’ wit. I also love the magic inherent in young adult novels such as Horten’s Miraculous Mechanisms. The Harry Potter novels, of course, were magnificent. I read “Dark Prince” by Christine Feehan over and over again. And when I was a kid, I dog-eared the pages of the second novel in the Vampire Diaries series.

What authors do you like to read?

At the moment, I have little time for reading. But see above for what I would read if I had more leisure. :-)

What inspired you to write Death’s Angel, your upcoming Lost Angels release?

If you’ve read the first novels in the Lost Angels series, you know full well what would inspire me to write the third book. This is Azrael’s book. Enough said.

If you could choose a dream cast for Death’s Angel, who would you pick?

I’ve been sort of out of the loop on who the newest big screen hunks are, to be honest. Blame it on lack of time, not interest. ;) But when it comes down to it, I’ll be honest. It would be SO difficult to find someone hot enough to play Azrael. It’s not just about looks, which would have to be jaw dropping in and of themselves. It’s also about voice, about poise, about the way he carries himself and his facial
expressions. Man, would that be a hard one to cast. You’d have a mob of very unhappy readers on your hands if the wrong guy were chosen. The same goes for Samael, who is possibly even more charismatic. And then there’s the bad guy…. Wow. Casting would have its work cut out for it.

Would you say you relate to any of your characters?

I would say that I relate to almost all of them in one way or another. Some more than others (Annabelle). Why? You have to write what you know. When you don’t, you strain, and it’s almost as if the reader can hear you straining.

This or that: Sweet or Salty?
LOL You’re the second person to ask me this recently. I wonder what the fascination is…. I like both, really. But in a pinch, sweet.

If you were deserted on an island, which author would you want to be stranded with?

My husband writes academic papers, so he counts as an author. I choose him.

Azrael smiled, flashing perfect white teeth that sported incisors slightly longer than the norm. Some people naturally looked like that, he knew, but on him it looked different enough that he didn’t smile often. On him, it seemed to fit too perfectly and only served to reinforce the otherworldly impressions people often had when looking at him.

He was a starkly charismatic individual. He was taller than anyone he knew, save perhaps Samael. His voice could literally mesmerize. He was also uncommonly, almost painfully handsome. He wasn’t certain why the Old Man had seen fit to bother with such a thing while simultaneously making him a vampire. It was like the curse of Beethoven, who created the most beautiful music in the world and couldn’t hear it. What good was a beautiful face when placed on a monster?

But Sophie didn’t seem to mind the hint of fang he exposed. In fact, as he brushed her mind, unable to help himself from drawing nearer to her in any way possible, he was surprised to find that she found it attractive. My God, she thought. He really does look like a vampire.

This was the second time she had thought such a thing. If he’d been capable of choking, he would have done so the first time her mind had muttered the impression. Hearing it now had nearly as strong an effect on Azrael. Sophie wasn’t repulsed by vampires. And the idea that he resembled one was appealing to her.

Of course, Azrael was no fool. A lot of girls believed they would enjoy the company of a vampire – if vampires existed. In reality, he knew they would cower or scream or run, or most likely all three. Still… he found himself hoping.

“Sophie Bryce, right? The maid of honor?” he asked, his smile utterly disarming. He’d had millennia to practice.

Sophie blinked and he read her thoughts. She was desperately trying to find her head in the wake of his sudden presence. She’d been torturing herself over the last few days, and he knew it. He’d watched her every night. Listened to her. He knew damn well that she was drawn to him – and that she hated herself for it.

He sensed it when a slight pain twinged up her arm and Sophie realized that her friend was holding her tight. Taylor’s fingers curled into Sophie’s forearm in utter distraction, her hazel eyes glued to Azrael. He knew she couldn’t help it and wasn’t aware of what she was doing, but the fact that she’d brought his archess even the slightest discomfort was difficult for Az to ignore. It upset him.

And with practiced control, he tamped down the anger.

Sophie, on the other hand, appeared to be glad for the pain. It shot through the dazed fog that Az’s appearance had caused. It also cleared her senses enough to allow her to pull her arm out of Taylor’s grip, clear her throat, and say, “Yes.” He tried not to smile when her voice cracked halfway through the single syllable. She cleared her throat some more and forced a smile to her lips. “That’s me.” She was so fucking cute with half of her glorious golden locks tucked up underneath that Penguins cap. Wisps of it fell about her face, framing it and caressing it the way he wanted to.

He chuckled softly, watching her carefully to gauge the effect his laugh had on her. Sophie’s gold eyes brightened, her lips parted, and her cheeks flushed ever so slightly. Az’s monster reared its head and he felt his vision begin to heat up. If he wasn’t careful, his eyes would begin to glow. “We never got the chance to actually meet the other night,” he told her, forcing himself to continue with the charade.

“No,” she agreed, relieved that she was finally finding her voice. “We didn’t.”

He cocked his head to one side and slid his gaze from hers to regard her friends. He needed to look away – just for a moment. Long enough to get himself under control once more. His gold eyes slowly scanned the faces of her companions – and then stopped on the pair of men who sat behind them.

A quick scan of their minds told him they were recent graduates from Carnegie Mellon University. The one on the right was the son of a wealthy factory owner here in the city. His name was Richard. And he’d been thinking all sorts of biblical things about Sophie that night.

Azrael grew very still and something dark flickered across his face. He knew it was there; he knew he was failing to hide his sudden fury. But he barely cared.

Richard fell back into the curve of his seat and swallowed hard as the blood drained from his face. Below him, Sophie cleared her throat, at once drawing Azrael’s attention. Sophie slowly stood and turned to face him. “Az, these are my friends, Taylor and Emily.” She gestured toward them and they smiled nervously, but politely, nodding in his direction.

Emily and Taylor’s eyes were still a little glazed over at his presence, so, Az allowed some of his vampiric influence to snake around and through the girls, easing them into a more comfortable state of relaxation.

It worked like a charm. Within seconds, Taylor was smiling easily and standing to greet him properly. “It’s a pleasure to meet you,” she said, extending her hand.

“Likewise,” Az agreed, and with a slight bow, accepted the offered hands of both Taylor and then Emily, who quickly followed suit.

While he shook hands, Sophie’s thoughts echoed through Az’s mind.

She couldn’t believe that her friends weren’t guessing he was the Masked One. It seemed so obvious to her now that she knew his secret. Everything about him screamed of the kind of rock star charisma that it took to hold millions of fans in sway.

Meanwhile, Sophie’s gaze traveled over Azrael’s form, and he tried not to visibly crow with the triumph he felt when she shamelessly took in the way the black button- up shirt under his sports coat stretched taut across the muscles of his chest. She was particularly fond of the curve of his neck where it met his shoulder.

Azrael released Emily’s hand, straightened again, and heard Sophie’s heart rate speed up.

He looked up to see that her sunshine eyes were glassy with unabashed desire. And, as if it would hide the way her mouth watered for him, she had pressed her bottom lip between two perfect, white teeth. Azrael’s gaze locked on the plump lip. He quickly slipped his hands into the pockets of his trench coat as they tightened into fists at his sides, and his nails began to cut into his palms. He imagined her pressing hard enough with her teeth to draw blood.

If she did… it would all be over.

“Juliette mentioned you live in Pittsburgh,” he said, trying to break through not only his tension, but hers. “I’d forgotten.” His tone was gentle, personal. He knew that to her, it was as if they were the only two in the arena.

“For now,” she told him flat-out. She didn’t want to bore him with the fact that she would only be there for two more days, but he was well aware.

“But what are you doing here?” she asked, honestly curious. It was quite a coincidence to her that she had never seen him before in her life – and then, suddenly, she’d seen him twice in the space of a week. She wasn’t stupid; she was wary.

That was okay with him. He had a story and he would use it, but even this lie was too much of a secret for him to share with her friends. Az glanced at Taylor and Emily and smiled an easy, even somewhat shy smile. “It’s a personal matter actually,” he said. “However…” he paused, turned, and glanced up toward the private booths up above them. His band awaited him in one of them; they had a bird’s eye view of the entire arena from their vantage point. He knew because he’d been watching Sophie from it all night.

He also knew that Sophie had never been in one of those suites herself, and he was hoping she’d be tempted enough by what he was about to offer that he could pull her away from her companions at least for a little while. “Second period will begin in a few minutes,” he said, looking back down at her and scorching her once more with stark eyes. “And there is plenty of room in our suite for another guest.” He chanced another glance at the men seated behind Sophie – especially Richard – and was smugly satisfied when the young man looked as though he wanted to piss himself. “Perhaps you would care to join me?” he asked, turning his gaze back on his archess.

He could hear her blood rushing through her veins. He was scaring her and thrilling her at the same time. She was finding it hard to think.

He wasn’t opposed to working with that; he had no desire to stand here and play the good guy much longer anyway.

A gentle push of his power, and it surrounded Sophie. In a few moments, she not only found it difficult to think, she found it impossible. Seconds ago, she’d had a thousand reasons why she should keep away from Azrael. And the fact that he belonged to – was destined to be with – another, was the most powerful.

But just then, every reason she’d had, and in fact, reason itself, fled from her consciousness and she found herself saying, “Yes.” She’d barely whispered it, but it was enough.

     Azrael’s smile broadened.

Review: Dance of Shadows by Yelena Black

Dance of Shadows #1
Release Date: February 12, 2013

Dancing with someone is an act of trust. Elegant and intimate; you're close enough to kiss, close enough to feel your partner's heartbeat. But for Vanessa, dance is deadly – and she must be very careful who she trusts . . .

Vanessa Adler attends an elite ballet school – the same one her older sister, Margaret, attended before she disappeared. Vanessa feels she can never live up to her sister's shining reputation. But Vanessa, with her glorious red hair and fair skin, has a kind of power when she dances – she loses herself in the music, breathes different air, and the world around her turns to flames . . .

Soon she attracts the attention of three men: gorgeous Zep, mysterious Justin, and the great, enigmatic choreographer Josef Zhalkovsky. When Josef asks Vanessa to dance the lead in the Firebird, she has little idea of the danger that lies ahead – and the burning forces about to be unleashed....

My Review

First off, the cover for this book is one of my all-time favorites. How beautiful and breath-taking..I wanted to read it immediately.
The story is so different from anything I have read. It is a young adult novel/suspense story. I love the fact that it has to do with ballerinas and immediately fell in love with the characters. The author uses specific details to describe the characters and I loved that. I felt like I could really imagine the characters and get a feel of what they were going thru. The main character Vanessa is thrown into an elite ballet school after her older sister suddenly disappears. She is a magnificent dancer and attracts the attention of the choreographer almost immediately. Vanessa is thrown into the world of dancing as well as another darker world that she has to face. Along the way she finds herself drawn to two completely different guys and the love triange begins... I love the relationship she has with the friends in the book and the humor that is added in at just the right moment to balance out the suspense. The ending was incredible. I could not put it down. You find yourself asking so many questions throughout the book and the author successfully answers them all...as well as  (of course) leaving a cliffhanger at the end...
I found myself loving the story more and more and finished the book within three days. If you love ballets, romance, suspense, and a great story then this is most definitely the book for you!! I am looking forward to the 2nd one!!!

Review: Under The Never Sky by Veronica Rossi

Young Adult Dystopian

Since she'd been on the outside, she'd survived an Aether storm, she'd had a knife held to her throat, and she'd seen men murdered. This was worse.

Exiled from her home, the enclosed city of Reverie, Aria knows her chances of surviving in the outer wasteland - known as The Death Shop - are slim. If the cannibals don't get her, the violent, electrified energy storms will. She's been taught that the very air she breathes can kill her. Then Aria meets an Outsider named Perry. He's wild - a savage - and her only hope of staying alive.

A hunter for his tribe in a merciless landscape, Perry views Aria as sheltered and fragile - everything he would expect from a Dweller. But he needs Aria's help too; she alone holds the key to his redemption. Opposites in nearly every way, Aria and Perry must accept each other to survive. Their unlikely alliance forges a bond that will determine the fate of all who live under the never sky.....
My Review

WOW...What can I say? What a fascinating book. For months I have read reviews and debated on when to start this. It sounded like more of a sci-fi book which kinda put me on hold for a little while but finally I opened it. and WOW...I immediately fell in love. The main character Aria was wonderful. She suffered and she overcame and i loved every minute. Perry was incredible. He is strong, determined, and resilient and makes for a perfect hero for this story. The world building was incredible. The aether storms were powerful and scary and fit the world perfectly. All the characters had their own "special" meaning and I loved learning all their quirks. I will admit that Cinder was a surprising favorite of mine. He made you wonder and made you think and I wanted to turn the pages faster just to see what would happen next with his story. This book is just incredible from beginning to end and the love story fascinating. I cannot wait to start the second book in the series to see where all my characters end up.....

Excerpt & Giveaway 18+: Tempted by the Storm by Maxine Mansfield

Genre: Erotic Fantasy
Heat level: 4, Scarlet Rose
Publisher: The Wild Rose Press

Larksong Hammerstrike has always been just the younger sister of Princess Aryanna. Never quite as pretty or as smart, always lacking, a mere empath whose power gets her into trouble more often than not. But at Carnalval, the festival of all things sexual, she unleashes her sensual side for a night in the arms of a masked stranger. When morning dawns, Lark can't resist a peek beneath the mask of her lover and is once again crushed by fate. The man of her lusty adventure is none other than the future Lord of the High Elves and destined to marry her sister. As heir to the kingdom of Landis and current instructor of wizardry at the Academy of Magical Arts, Sarco Sunwalker is honor bound to rise above the temptation of the beautiful empathic student who invades his mind, body, and soul. But when sparks fly, lightning strikes, and thunder rolls, Sarco finds himself more than tempted by the storm of Lark's passion and vows to find a solution that will prevent a war between races, fulfill an infamous quest, and win Lark's hand.

There was only one word that could describe the creature standing before him. Wonderful.
“Did you say something?” the woman whispered.
He shook his head. “Nothing, I just can’t believe my luck. You really are real and here with me.”
She smiled, but her smile didn’t extend to her eyes.
Before another heartbeat passed or another breath taken, he stood at her side. With tenderness, he gazed into her gentle, masked face and took both of her hands in his. He was humbled as her fingers trembled even more than his own did. “We don’t have to do this if you’d rather not.”
She smiled wider, and her eyes gleamed with mischief. “I suppose we might as well. After all, we’re already here, and you’re at least halfway undressed.”
Sliding his hands up her arms and around her shoulders to her back, Sarco felt for and found the clasps holding her gown together. With the flick of a wrist, they gave way, and with a swish, the silky fabric fell to her hips exposing lush, rose-tipped breasts. Just the right size to hold in both hands, to fondle, to caress, to taste. “Hmm, it seems you’re halfway undressed yourself.”

Tell us a bit about yourself:

Gracen: This is the hardest question you’ll ask me. LOL Talking about myself is so hard, but I love coffee. Let’s call it what it is—nectar of the gods! And I drink way too much nectar. I have two boys that I adore and that keep me running from point A to point B. A husband of twenty-one years that is my very own personal hero. I’m a dog lover and have two amazing canine daughters, Bama and Ella—a Dachshund and a Great Dane.

When did you begin writing?

Gracen: I’ve always been a hopeless daydreamer, but I started putting those dreams into stories in the sixth grade.

Have you ever been discouraged in regard to your writing ability and if so, how did you get past it and move forward?

Gracen: I think all authors get discouraged at one point or another. I get over it because the alternative is to quit writing and my sanity is directly linked to how often I write. The voices in my head don’t go away just because I don’t want to write, so I continue to craft worlds regardless of how discouraged I might get.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

Gracen: The paranormal with lots of steamy romance.

What is your writing style? Do you like to outline or just write as you go?

Gracen: Ha! If I tried to outline or plot, my muse—Dom—would just throw monkey wrenches into anything I’d outlined. He loves tormenting me with the unexpected. So, while I’m technically, a pantser, I prefer to say I’m a “hot seat writer” because when I sit down to write, I never know what tricky situation Dom is going to put my characters in next…or how I’ll get them out of it! LOL

Do you have a favorite spot where you like to write?

Gracen: I can write anywhere, but at home I prefer to write at the kitchen table. There’s a bay window there and when I’m stuck, I’ll stare out at the trees. It’s calming and helps my muse.

What is something you've written that will never see the light of day?

Gracen: Ha! Probably my first book, Deadly Deceptions (I think that’s what I named it). It proved to me that I could write a full-length novel, but gawd it’s atrocious! lol

What is your writer food?

Gracen: I don’t have any. I tend to forget to eat when I write.

What's the hardest thing about writing for you?

Gracen: Carving out time in the day to write. With my busy family, not to mention housework/chores, sometimes squeezing in a little bit of writing can be difficult. Then other times I have all day to write.

What inspires you to write?

Gracen: Anything can provide inspiration. Lyrics, a photo, and sometimes just an innocent comment from someone—all of them can have a huge impact on inspiration.

How many books have you written and which is your favorite?

Gracen: I’ve got six published books. My favorite is the Road to Hell series, with the final book—Genesis Queen—being my absolute favorite.

What are some of your favorite books?

Gracen: Anything by Nalini Singh.

What authors do you like to read?

Gracen: Nalini Singh is my favorite author. After that would be Kresley Cole, Meljean Brook and Anya Bast, to name a few.

What inspired you to write Road to Hell series?

Gracen: The Road to Hell Series was spawned from a nightmare where a demon/ghost was gunning for my kids. After I woke up and began to realize it was just a dream, I got to thinking. The worst nightmare any parent can endure is when their child is harmed. Especially when it’s something you cannot control nor do anything about. The absolute helplessness of this is crushing. I’ve endured this type of debilitation with my eldest son when he began to suffer grand mal seizures.

But the nightmare got me to thinking “what if” it was something paranormal and not medical affecting her child? How would she deal with one crisis after another, realizing there is nothing she can do to change what he comes from within? To what lengths would she go to save her child? And that was the inspiration behind the Road to Hell series.

If you could choose a dream cast for your books, who would you pick?

Gracen: The is no dream cast for any of my characters, so unless we’re able to pluck them from my mind…there would never be any perfect one person for any part.

Would you say you relate to any of your characters? If so, which one and why?

Gracen: I can relate to Madison because she’s a mom just like I am.

This or that.
Sweet or Salty? Salty
Naughty or nice? Naughty
Cats or dogs? Dogs
Vanilla or chocolate? Chocolate

If you were deserted on an island, which author would you want to be stranded with?

Gracen: Nalini Singh because I’m sure she could entertain us with awesome stories. Thanks for letting me join you on your blog!

Where you can stalk me—not really!—but I would love to meet and interact with you:

“I like the way you move, kitten.”

She took a deep breath, like she needed the extra oxygen to deal with him. “Did you square away the angels in Hell?”

“Yes.” Details weren’t necessary when they both knew he’d instituted a brutal torture regimen for all of them. “Dance with me?”

“To this music?”

“You didn’t appear to be having any problem.” He held his hand out toward her.

She stared at his palm. Her expression was reminiscent of an individual confident selling their soul was a reckless choice but entering the deal anyway.

“I don’t bite.”

Her gaze felt like an impact against his. “You did in Hell.”

He wrangled the grin under control. “Then I won’t bite.”

“I don’t think it’s a good idea, Micah.”

“Why?”

A casual shrug when nothing about her body language suggested she felt relaxed. She crossed her arms beneath her breasts. “Nix says my idea of dancing is sex with clothes on. He couldn’t tolerate it and if he couldn’t….” She trailed off and gaped at him as if she’d just realized she’d been about to insult him.

Micah grinned. “I haven’t lived as long as I have without executing restraint.” He stepped closer to her. “I’ve controlled myself with you more than any other.” Because she is my woman and deserves my respect.

Madison allowed him to pull her arms free of their defensive fold. Holding her gaze, Micah coaxed her into his embrace…left hip to left hip, his leg thrusting between her knees, gliding upward and parting her thighs.

She bit her bottom lip. Her breathing grew shallow. The heavy beat of the music thumped around them. His pulse throbbed faster.

Hell’s delights, she felt fantastic against him.

“Relax,” he said when she remained inflexible. A soft wind would break one of her bones. “I only want to dance with you.” Like when they’d been married, just a different manner of movement. This one more intimate than what they normally partook.

Her focus locked on his jaw, and she sharply inhaled when he slid his palm down her back and settled on her hips. He executed the first moves and she followed. As if magnetized, they gyrated in perfect synchronicity.
