Excerpt for Crimson Moon:

He dropped my wrist, and turned around to face the downtown skyline. Seconds later, I heard a small growl come from Alex. I felt my breath catch in my throat as he turned back to face me. It was like the person in front of me now was a totally different person then who was standing in front of me not less than 30 seconds ago. Everything about him now had an air of dark masculine power. The biggest difference was his eyes. I looked into his eyes and was mesmerized. Alex trapped me in his gaze and held me there. His eyes were a dark violet, with an outer ring of light grey, almost silvery. He had this smirk on his lips, that if I didn’t know any better, was almost predatory in nature. This was all before he opened his mouth to speak. Good God, that voice! I swear if I wasn’t already enthralled by his eyes, then his voice would do me in. I suddenly fought the urge to swoon.

His voice had dropped at least two octaves and was raspy, rough, almost like coarse sand.

“Is this what you wanted, Jade? Take a good look because this is the true me; the hunter, the predator, hell, I’m the top of the food chain.” As he was talking, he moved around behind me, whispering in one ear then in the other. He now had this bold swagger about his walk that wasn’t there before. It was almost like he owned the place. While I was listening to him, I could feel him sliding one arm around my waist and his other hand trailing down my cheek, burning my skin along the way. I knew at that point, if he didn’t have his arm wrapped around me, my legs would have given out from under me for sure. There was only one word to describe what was going on.

It was torture.

Specifically; slow, erotic and predatory torture. Thing was, I was helpless to stop it. Everything about him at that moment had me rooted in place, powerless. Yet I still wasn’t scared of him. Even seeing his true nature up close and personal didn’t frighten me. He stepped from behind to face me once again. As Alex faced me, within a blink of an eye, he had pulled me to him, crushing my soft body to his steel chest and pulling my right arm up to his lips.

“If you’re trying to scare me, Alex, it’s not working.” He just smiled and brushed his nose against the back of my wrist. “Oh, I know it’s not working, Jade, darling. Actually, it’s doing quite the opposite. But, if I wanted to have you, there would be nothing that could stop me from taking you. You forget, Jade, I can sense emotions and right now, I have you completely defenseless. I could take you into that cozy bedroom of yours and after a very satisfying night…”

Excerpt for Twist of Fate:

Getting up and smiling at Jade, Kalieigh took her leave. I turned back to Jade and could think of nothing else but kissing her senseless, so I indulged and did just that. I think Jade knew what I was going to do because as soon as my lips slanted over hers, she pulled me down on top of her as she laid down on the couch. I grinned into her lips and tried to keep most of my weight off her by propping myself up on my arms. She growled and pulled me down hard. I sunk into her and pretty much all was lost.

I felt her arms slide up and around my neck and her nails scraping the back of my neck as I moved from her swollen red lips to her neck. I found her pulse point and attacked it softly. I felt her nails sink into my back, right between my shoulder blades, and drag across. The little minx was pushing at my self-control and she knew exactly what she was doing. I pulled up and looked, to find she was smiling wickedly at me. I smirked right back at her.

I pulled her arms from around my neck and stretched them out over the top of her head. I felt her struggle, but the more she did, the more I kept her where she was.

“So this is how we’re going to play it, hmm? Have it your way, angel…” was all I said to her. Her eyes had darkened to nearly black by this point.

“Caleb, for the love of mercy, shut up and kiss me!”

I could hear the faint tone of desperation in her voice. The knowledge that I caused this sent a surge of smug pride through me. Releasing her arms, I bent my head and kissed her again, sliding my tongue across her pursed lips, demanding entrance. Jade relented and opened her lips, allowing me access to the blissful warmth inside. I could feel a rumble between us, but, surprisingly, it came from Jade’s throat. I ran my hand slowly up the side of her torso, and up the side of her neck, feeling the muscles tense up. As my hand went back down, I slowed down enough so that my fingers were just skimming her skin. She twisted from side to side to get me to relent, but I wasn’t done with her yet. I leaned in and ran my tongue across the outer rim of her ear. That elicited a moan from Jade that sent sparks down my spine. Suddenly, the noble part of me decided to rear its head. I pulled myself up from a flushed and panting Jade, who was looking up at me with a mixture of heat, confusion and a hint of murderous intent. I closed my eyes, trying to gain a small semblance of control.

“If you are having any second thoughts, stop me now because this is the last chance. I want you to be sure Jade.”

Jade sat up, grabbed the front of my shirt and jerked me towards her. I could feel the heat of her glare, so I opened my eyes to find her eyes had darkened with desire. Her response came out as a hiss.

“The only thought I am having right this second is that if you do not take me upstairs and finish what we started the night of the party, I will personally STAKE you with a silver spike.” The next thing I knew, she had ripped my shirt completely open and was running her hands over my now exposed chest.

I hauled her up, slamming my lips on hers and flew us both up to my master bedroom. I pretty much tossed her on the bed, and as I stalked towards her, step by step, we were both losing clothes at a very rapid pace. When I reached the edge of the bed, Jade beckoned with a crook of her finger and a sexy smirk on her face. I crawled up the bed and as I hovered over her body, I thanked every god that would listen for giving me such a beautiful creature to love. Sentiments aside, I leaned down and chuckled hotly in her ear.

“I hope you know I have wanted this to happen for a while. Are you ready for a workout? I know I am.”

I spent the rest of the night and following day making good on my promise.

“Now what?”“Nothing.”Rach sniffed.Craig shifted to eye her warily. “Since when do you answer me with single words?”“Since I decided I’m not talking to you,” she answered with a shrug, crumpling up the white paper wrapper from her sub.Craig leaned his face in close to her neck and enjoyed the startled jerk of her shoulders. Her eyes opened wide in surprise. His breath shifted a few strands of hair at the nape of her neck as he whispered, “Why, because you want me?”“You’re incorrigible,” she said, breathless, her cheeks flushed. She’s enjoying this. The thought pleased him. Rach was on her back beside him now, her eyes closed. He glanced around the park to see if anyone was watching. No one was. She won’t mind…“I can feel you staring.”Craig smiled down at her. “So what.”She peeked at him with one green eye. “So stop it.”“And if I don’t?” Maybe she’d tackle him, push him down on the blanket and…She didn’t. She promptly closed her eye and went back to pretending indifference. “I’ll hit you, that’s what.”“Not if I do this, you won’t.”He’d only meant it to be a short kiss, but the pleasure of touching his lips to hers kept him there longer. Her tongue was velvet soft and warm against his and the slow mating of their mouths quickened his heartbeat even as he told himself, It’s no big deal, just a kiss. She nipped his bottom lip and sent heat sliding through his body. The woman could kiss. She whispered soft against his lips, “Now why don’t you admit that it’s you who wants me.” Follow Niecey Roy on FaceBook / Twitter / Blog Come and join me and Niecey Roy Wednesday January 30th for an amazing Cars themed event! Prologue

Resonating

THE DAY WAS fading and I stood staring out the car window. My backpack was strapped to my back, even though it was extremely uncomfortable sitting with it on. The window was cracked just a touch, and I could hear screams echoing over from nearby streets. It made the hair on my neck stand on end and sent a snake of terror through me. Who was letting out those blood curdling screeches? What was happening? I had hitched a ride with my best friend Sarah after a study session for a huge math final the next day. I was as ready as I was going to be, even though I hated math with a passion.

Another screech resonated across the houses, bouncing off the stucco and windows, making it seem as though the entire world was screaming. My eyes widened as I scanned the streets before averting my eyes to my cell phone, flipping through some websites I had wanted to check out to distract myself from the craziness. People were running chaotically, not a lot but a few. It just occurred to me that there had been quite a few people clogging up the streets on the way home.

“What the heck is going on? Some stupid rave we didn’t get invited to?” Sarah groaned as she maneuvered around another crowd of people who kept jumping in front of the car and jaywalking across the street. Some had bags of groceries, some with bottles stacked in wheeled wire carts, tugging their load along as they flitted across the street. I glanced up from my phone and shrugged, trying not to think much of it.

“Probably, or some flash flood warning again. It’s been storming for a week. The power probably went down again,” I muttered.

“Oh, I hope not! I don’t want to miss my show tonight! If it goes out again, I can’t DVR it for tomorrow! Ugh!” Sarah cursed as another straggler popped in front of the car, making her slam the brakes. “Out of the road, moron!” she hollered out the window. I cringed at the glare from the man who gave the car a tap with his palm as he continued on across the way. Road rage was not uncommon here in Vegas, and Sarah was a poster child for it.

“I’ll stick it on my DVR in case your power goes out. One of us is bound to have electricity,” I offered.

“Thanks, that’d be great. I’ll die if I miss another episode. I already don’t know what’s going on.”

“You and your vampire addiction.”

“Oh shut up, you know you like the show, too.” Sarah swatted at me as best she could without tearing her eyes away from the street, making it easy for me to block her hand.

“Hey! I do, but I’m not dependent on them like someone I know. Can you say addicted? The first step to recovery is to admit it!” I swatted her hand out of my way as I laughed at her. She gave me an icy glare before weaving out of the crowd, gaining speed down toward my neighborhood. A thump on my window made me jump, and I frowned at the person. A woman with crazed eyes stared eerily at me as we passed. Was that blood dripping from her mouth?

In a flash she was gone, lost in the chaotic crowd. I shook my head. Studying had fried my brain, because now I was seeing things.

“I’d want to be a vampire if I could. They’re all hot, and immortality has benefits,” Sarah sighed, thinking of the life she could have in her head.

“Careful what you wish for, you might not like the fanged dental job or the bloody messes you have to get into.” Arriving at my house just then, I jumped out of the car before she could swat me again. I slammed the door behind me and waved at her as she stuck her tongue out, rolling her eyes at me as I continued to laugh.

As her semi-new Honda rolled away, the screams caught my attention once more. The sun had just set under the west Summerlin Mountains, casting long, stretching shadows across the valley and streets. The chill it gave along with the elevated humidity coupled with the now cool September breezes made me rub my arms. I wasn’t sure if it was so much the wind as the bone-chilling screams in the distance.

“April! Get inside!” My mother’s voice brought my focus onto her. Hurrying through the gate that cut off our property from the street, I helped her shut and lock it. She looked as spooked as I was, and I waited until we were inside to ask her what the matter was.

“Something’s wrong.” Her wild eyes darted about the street before she twirled around and made a beeline for the door.

“You think?” I bit my lip as her icy glare pierced into me. I needed to shut my smart mouth. “Sorry, Mom.”

“What’s going on?” Jeremy’s voice made me turn toward the living room where he sat in front of his Xbox, his game on hold in the middle of an all-out gun battle.

“Nothing squirt, keep playing. You might beat my score one day.” I winked at him as he smiled, turning back to his game, newly eager to beat it.

“The news said there have been incidents… attacks.”

“What kind of attacks?” I grabbed an apple off the pile in the fruit basket and bit down on the sweet, bitter fruit. Crunching on my snack, I finally noticed the stacks of canned food and water bottles littering the kitchen. My curiosity was getting the better of me when I realized the windows had boards nailed onto them and the sliding glass door had huge planks of plywood fixed across it.

“Um… Mom?”

“I don’t know, they’re saying people are turning into some sort of zombie-like vampires, pouncing on others, biting and sucking blood out of them.” Her voice cracked as she shoved some more food into a cabinet, making a pathway to the hall where our bedrooms were.

“Why didn’t you call me? I could have come home to help.”

“Randy helped us.” She looked up at me, knowing this statement would make me fume. “Besides, the cell phones are cutting in and out.”

“Randy? The plumber? Come on, Mom, you know he only wants you for one thing. That’s all he wants, he’s a no good convicted criminal, how could you…?”

“That’s enough of that,” she snapped, giving me a stern look. “He has done plenty for us. He’s coming back with more wood to bar the rest of the windows and bring more water.” She sighed. Her eyes looked tired as the worry made her wrinkles deepen.

“Water? Why? We have the filter, we have water.”

“No!” She shoved the cup I had grabbed from the drying rack before I could fill it with the water. I looked at her, shocked and unmoving. The water was running, clear and cool. The smell of chlorine permeated the air, reminding me to turn it off and wait for answers.

“Mom?”

“Don’t drink it.”

“Why?” her silence made my temper seep into my chest. “Mom, what’s going on?”

She stopped shoving paper plates and cups into another area of the open pantry and sighed. The look she gave me showed me oceans of fear. This was bad, really, really bad.

“It could be a virus, or the water could be contaminated. No one knows, April. People are dying from it, too. The hospitals are full of bodies. People are keeling over out of nowhere. Or turning rabid….” She ran her hand through her messy hair, exasperated and looking extremely worn out. Her hands shook as she reached for more supplies. “We have to stay here, inside, for a while. Be safe.”

I nodded slowly, letting her words sink in as I glanced back toward Jeremy. I knew she was right. She always was. Mom was as streetwise as a person got. She knew how to survive. She had made the few dollars we’d had during hard times stretch to feed us. She had turned her side internet business into a profitable one, bringing loads of extra income to supplement her puny teacher’s salary. We had been able to buy a house with it. She had been self- sufficient ever since Dad had died three years ago.

Still, he had left an empty abyss in his place, nothing could fill it. Nothing ever would. Not even this Randy, who had endearing aspirations of filling the spot. Nothing could ever hope to replace him.

“I’m going to pull the SUV into the garage, get it stocked with supplies in case we have to leave suddenly.” She disappeared down the hall, leaving me suspended in disbelief.

I solemnly grabbed a bottle of water to drink, cracking the seal open and gulping down the fresh fluid. The screams I had heard earlier crept back into my mind, making the gooseflesh spring on my skin anew as the comprehension spilled over me. What did this mean? A sudden surge of panic filled me as I remembered that Sarah was heading back to her place. I had to warn her, had to let her know what was going on and to load up her car and come back to my place. It was much safer here, with high walls and wrought iron. My mom had bought it because of the fortress- like feel to it, always so paranoid of intruders. Funny, I thought she had been nuts, but maybe she’d had some sort of sixth sense about it. Her uncanny intuition was scary at times.

Pulling my cell phone out of my jeans pocket, I noticed the “no signal” symbol and moved about the house until I found one or two bars staring back at me. Dialing her number in desperation, I waited as the phone rang and rang.

Come on Sarah, answer me, please….

The familiar beeping sound of her voicemail announcement commenced, and I cursed under my breath, hitting the redial as fast as it let me. I kept calling until the signal died once more, leaving me to wonder about and worry for my friend. I prayed she had made it home safely. I prayed the chaos of the world had not swallowed her up.

The woman, or girl—he wasn’t quite sure for he hadn’t asked her what her age was, though it seemed pretty certain that she was in her late teens, maybe early twenties—made her way in easily. She slipped quietly into the rear of one of the main greenhouses. It was lit up in there like twilight all night long with the full spectrum of light slowly growing as daybreak came. It was sufficient to see a lot of the floor, though the foliage and abundance of greenery would be sufficient to hide her for a while. Elijah knew she had figured this out and was now weaving her way through jagged rows of saplings, fruit and eucalyptus trees. Her black clothing hid her enough that no one noticed the svelte woman dodging people, sticking to the shadows and snapping quick, concise pictures of everything she saw.

She’s studying us.

Elijah shook his head, amused by this revelation. Of all things, this human was studying other humans! Ha! But what for? What did she want to do with those pictures? Why didn’t she just waltz right up to the door and introduce herself? She was definitely human and might have been welcomed.

Or maybe not. He frowned. Katrina was volatile and could decide she was a threat to the city instead. And what if she was a hybrid human? Could she be?

New Release: The Inheritance by Zillah Anderson

Kaylee has one night to re-connect with her ailing father, but they don’t have much to talk about. Inspired, she decides to read him a story that eerily mirrors their relationship. She wants to bury the hatchet so badly, but all she can remember are the pranks Zachary pulled and in an attempt to make parenthood interesting. But long ago Kaylee learned his Achilles heel, the one silly object that could undo him and change the balance in their relationship. Should she use it? Will she? Find out what happens when love and forgiveness become twisted by anger, retaliation, and disconnect.

“‘Forgive?” he finally wheezed and Katherine was surprised he actually acknowledged that there was a
wall between them. She forced her lips into something that was a cross between a tender smile and a
wince.’”

“‘Come on, Dad. It’s not like you did anything bad. We just never really clicked. There are far worse
relationships.’”

“‘The clearing of a phlegm-coated throat tugged the young woman from her thoughts. “Forgive?” Zane
asked again.’”

“‘Kathy sighed and forced herself to squeeze the fingers that were too much like flesh-covered cushions.
“You weren’t home. You had a lot going on at work. And you played jokes that I took the wrong
way. Everything is in hindsight and we both know I was sensitive as a kid. I understand. Can’t we just
forget about that?” Katherine’s voice was soft and rich, but it shook far more than she wanted it to.
It had always been so easy for her to talk about him behind his back, to complain about how much he
embarrassed her. But now everywhere she looked there were tubes running out of the arms that she’d
wrestled with as a kid. The whir and buzz of the machines made Kathy’s jaw ache from clenching. The
expression on Zane’s sagging face with too much forehead showed that he didn’t like her interpretation,
but he relaxed deep into the mattress at her willingness to move on.’”

“‘But too soon a look out the window at the setting sun reminded her it was time to go. Kathy rose,
kissed her father’s cheek, and said her soft goodbyes that had the pretense of being difficult. Maybe in
some ways they were; after years of growing up in a blurred reality it was hard for her to tell anymore.’”

“‘When Kathy left, there was something on the visitor’s couch in Zane’s room to take her place,
something that Kathy’s mother had kept in storage for years. It was almost the size of a toddler and
was dressed in one of Kathy’s old dresses. Its tiny feet even had her old patent leather baby shoes. The
plastic eyes were unfeeling, dark blotches in smooth plastic skin that stared directly across the room
towards Zane. The setting sun cast eerie shadows over the synthetic, butchered hair that framed the
artificial face.’”

“‘Zane tried to sleep, but even with his eyes closed he knew the toy was there looking at him. Somehow
the little thing saw everything he had ever done and wanted to do, everything he regretted, every little
thing at all. And it didn’t care about any of it. With his eyes still tightly shut, Zane’s good hand fumbled
for the button to call the nurse. The box had slipped down under the covers and out of reach. If he
opened his eyes to look for it he’d have to see the dear little girl gone wrong and all her features: the
straight legs, un-skinned knees, and tidy little bows on scuffed shoes. But there would be no emotion
and no hint of a smile. That was not how a child should behave. If anything, it was the demeanor of a
killer.’”

“‘Stop, stop, stop! Zane screamed in his mind, his weakened heart bursting against his chest. His twisted
mouth struggled to work as he focused on the sound of his breathing and opened his eyes.’”

“‘The bright lights had been shut off so he could sleep, though the curtains had been left open. Outside,
the city lights twinkled in a cold rhythm. Zane’s gaze focused on the couch — the empty couch. His
breathing went sharp and shallow, a raspy noise against the low hum of the room’s medical equipment.
Cleanser mixed with the scents of decaying flesh and old woman’s face powder. There was a brief flash
of memory from when he had caught his daughter patting the face of one of her favorite dolls with

a puff borrowed from her grandmother. The thing’s hair had reeked for weeks afterwards and little
particles of scented dust had shown up on furniture at the most inopportune times.’”

“‘Zane’s neck ached from not enough movement and he winced when he tried to turn his head. All he
had to do was look down. The tainted perfume grew stronger and crawled right up his nostrils to the
working cells in his brain. The soft outline of a ragtag cut hair was just barely visible in his peripheral
vision.’”

“‘Inhumanly smooth plastic brushed up his arm. The molded fingertips were permanently curled and
the seams of the plastic bit ever-so-lightly into his skin. “Daddy, I’m a good girl.” The voice was a soft
whisper that was close to — but not the same — as his daughter’s. “I’ll be your little girl. I’ll sit with
you.” A tight whine strangled out of his throat. It was worse than if the doll had wanted to kill him.

My Review

WOAH, WOW, and HOLY SH**!!! This was my second try with an audio book. I'm like a 3 year old when it comes to attention span. I am seriously blown away with this story. This is a sci-fi/dystopian novel about a girl named Amy. She and her parents are being frozen for a journey to a new planet. She's leaving behind every thing she knew to go. The chapters rotate between her point of view and Elder, an inhabitant of the ship taking them to the new planet. She has been consciously dreaming while being frozen and thinking of what is to come. Elder, the future leader of the ship, is unaware of the cryogenic-ally frozen people that are on an unknown part of the ship. Moving forward...Amy is unexpectedly awakened. Things aren't what they seem on Godspeed and Amy and Elder will not stop until they find the truth.

Just when you think you have the story figured out, there is a new twist thrown into the mix. I will admit that I had my suspicions from the get go. I was right but the way the story went made me have my doubts. Oh man, the revelations will have your head spinning. This book is full of intrigue, mystery and even a wild goose chase! Sci-fi is not usually my cup of tea but I think I'm having a change of heart. The last few sci-fi's  I have read were fantastic. I am definitely interested in reading the rest of this series. I can't believe it took me so long to read it. I feel like slapping myself silly. If you haven't read it, you definitely should check it out.

New Release: Phantom by Laura DeLuca

The “Phantom” was a musical phenomenon that Rebecca had always found enchanting. She had no idea that her life was about to mirror the play that was her obsession. When her high school drama club chooses “Phantom” as their annual production, Rebecca finds herself in the middle of an unlikely love triangle and the target of a sadistic stalker who uses the lines from the play as their calling card.

Rebecca lands the lead role of Christine, the opera diva, and like her character, she is torn between her two co-stars— Tom the surfer and basketball star who plays the lovable hero, and Justyn, the strangely appealing Goth who is more than realistic in the role of the tortured artist.

Almost immediately after casting, strange things start to happen both on and off the stage. Curtains fall. Mirrors are shattered. People are hurt in true phantom style. They all seem like accidents until Rebecca receives notes and phone calls that hint at something more sinister. Is Justyn bringing to life the twisted character of the phantom? Or in real life are the roles of the hero and the villain reversed? Rebecca doesn’t know who to trust, but she knows she’s running out of time as she gets closer and closer to opening night. Only when the mask is stripped away, will the twenty first century phantom finally be revealed.

The orchestra tuned for its virtuoso, and Justyn stood ready. But no one else was ready for the magical performance he began. Beside her, Carmen was rambling on about something mundane. Rebecca elbowed her to silence so she could listen to the perfectly thrilling tenor. As she listened to the song unfold, the world around her started to slip away. Gone was the high school auditorium. Gone were the rowdy teenagers. The Gothic stranger on the stage had become the embodiment of Erik, and Rebecca watched him in all his dark glory, belting out his tormented love through the words of his song. And she was as breathless with wonder as Christine herself must have been when the masked stranger serenaded her in the candlelit labyrinth of the opera house. In that moment, Justyn wasn’t just portraying the phantom. Justyn was the phantom.

“Let the music touch your soul.
Let the darkness make you whole.
Do not fear what is unknown.
Your true path has now been shown.
Listen to the words I sing.
Embrace the peace that night will bring.”

As he continued to sing in his deep but somehow angelic voice, Rebecca found that she couldn’t tear her eyes away from him. With every line, her heart began to beat faster. She truly felt the arms of night wrapping her in a warm embrace. She could almost feel the hands of the phantom glide along her body as the words poured forth. The music caressed her. It possessed her—mind, body and soul. Each word left her longing, yearning for more.

She was gawking so obviously, it was hardly surprising when Justyn felt her eyes on him and steadily met her gaze. She realized her mouth was hanging open in stunned awe, and she quickly snapped it shut. His lips moved into just a small hint of a smile. He never took his eyes off her while he sang the final verse, making her cheeks flush to the point that she felt almost feverish. But it wasn’t embarrassment but excitement, arousal even, which was sending her mind spinning in so many directions.

When the song was over, and Rebecca had recovered just a hint of her composure, she couldn’t help but burst into a healthy round of applause. A few scattered people joined in, including Debbie and Carmen after she nudged them in the ribs. But only Miss King seemed to truly appreciate the brilliance of his talent as much as Rebecca did.

“That was amazing, Justyn!” the teacher gushed.

“Lord Justyn,” he corrected as he stepped down from the stage.

A few others complimented him as well, but he took in all in stride. In fact, his serious expression never faltered as he stepped down from the stage. He seemed almost bored, like it was all he could do to hold back a yawn, despite the smiles and words of encouragement.

But not everyone in the crowd was pleased as Justyn glided down the aisle, so ethereal in his dark garments that he still resonated the spirit of the Opera Ghost. Miss King might have been excited about the newest male addition to her cast after being limited for many years, but Tom and his group of boisterous companions glared at him as he passed them by. Jay sneered and tossed a balled up piece of paper in Justyn’s direction, but the Goth was quick, and caught it in his hand without missing a beat.

“I think you dropped something,” he said.
His speaking voice was no less melodic than his singing voice, but something about his tone made Rebecca shiver. He tossed the paper back at Jay, who was nowhere near as coordinated as Justyn. He practically fell off his seat in his efforts to catch it.

“Hey vampire,” Tom called when Justyn went to walk away. “Are you sure you can handle the competition?”

Justyn smiled, a cool, sarcastic half-smile, and crossed his arms over his chest. “Are you?”

Miss King didn’t notice the short confrontation, and Justyn vanished from the auditorium as quickly and mysteriously as he had appeared. Only Rebecca had noticed the very real tension between the two boys. She wondered if it was a bad omen for them to start off the production with hard feelings and envy. That could only lead to trouble. The kind of trouble that could end with someone getting hurt. The kind of trouble that Rebecca would do whatever it took to avoid.

Review: The Domino Effect by Andrew Cotto

Young Adult-Coming of Age

The Domino Effect is the story of Danny Rorro, a charismatic kid from Queens poisoned by the past. A series of painful defeats have left him scarred and isolated from his neighborhood, his parents, and, most significantly, the benevolent ways of his childhood when he was known as “Domino.” With great insight, imagery and wit, Danny recalls his past in Queens and his coming-of-age at Hamden Academy. This fast paced and powerful story is rich with conflict, humor, tenderness and music—just like life, especially when coming-of-age.

 My Review

This story takes place in the 90's. Danny's childhood wasn't all fun and games. His father always taught Danny to be the bigger person when it comes to acceptance. Danny, aka Domino, was dealt a bad hand when he tried to include the new arrivals at his school. He lived in a predominately Italian neighborhood and there was an influx of Spanish families moving in. The neighborhood wasn't as accepting of the new kids and caused some problems with Danny that lead to his downward spiral. His parents think it wise to move from the neighbor and start fresh elsewhere. Fast-forward two years... Danny starts school at a boarding school in New Jersey. (WOOOO JERSEY!!) Sorry, had to show my Jersey pride there. During his time at Hamden, Danny will have his heart broken, fall in love and come into his own skin.

I was really surprised with this book. Danny's behavior was childish and he seemed a bit stubborn. But then I remembered what it was like to be a teenager. Danny really transforms himself by the end of the book. It was incredibly moving and downright hilarious at times. It really made me feel like I knew Danny. It all makes perfect sense in the end and the cover is a nice touch. I always enjoy when the cover has something to do with the book. This is definitely a great read for teens but I'm not sure how relatable it would be to them. Again, I grew up in the 90's so this felt like home to me. Definitely recommend.

What people are saying about it

"J.V.K really developed a story line that was strong and very gripping; it catches your attention and has instances that you can relate to in real life, she builds a reality that is not only believable but also encouraging, as her story Black Lace is really all about free choice.–Paranormal Reads

“Vivian is not your average female character. She is no damsel in distress for sure, but she does suffer from some major mood swings and some temper issues. She isn't one that needs rescuing, except from maybe herself. This book has vampires, werewolves and a few other creatures, but doesn't follow the same style as most books in this genre. If you are looking for something different that has action and some heated moments, this is the read for you. ”- Mystical World of Book Reviews

What a deliciously dark and twisted love story! Brilliantly complex characters pull you in and keep you
captivated. Just when you think it can't get any better, the author takes you back to scenes and replays the treasures that you missed! The beginning of an amazing series...a must-read indeed!” – Kristy Bueno

“Black Lace is a truly original read. I have yet to read another 'vampire' book quite like it. The originality lies directly in the uniqueness of the plot and storyline. It weaves and twists so quickly, and generally has a very fast pace, so much so that I was out of breath keeping up.” – Bex ‘n’ Books

Somehow, she will have to choose between her country, her power, and the love she always thought would guide her--or risk losing everything to the oncoming storm.
My Review
Five stars does not even touch how amazing this book is...WOW...Leigh Bardugo has created an breath-taking, phenomenal world...As you are reading you feel as though you are living every moment with the characters. Alina is such a strong heroine. Her drive to fight the Darkling and save Ravka makes me want to fight with her and she deals with so many emotions along the way. Several new characters are introduced as well as the return of some of my favorites and I loved every one of them. I wont give away too much since this book does not release until June but I wanted readers to know that Leigh Bardugo does NOT disappoint with this sequel. Usually it is hard to love a sequel more than the first but with this one YOU DO!! You learn so much more about each character and there is non-stop action. The Darkling is as "dark" as ever and it just made the story more momentous. So needless to say...I COMPLETELY LOVED this book and cannot wait to read the conclusion. Alina & Mal are some of my most favorite characters ever written. Well done, Leigh Bardugo....Well done....
